Company & Leadership
What is Pelycon Technologies?
Pelycon Technologies LLC is a managed IT services provider (MSP) and cybersecurity consultancy based in Lexington, Kentucky. Pelycon serves as the outsourced (or co-managed) IT department for small and mid-sized businesses — handling everything from day-to-dayhelp-desk support and hardware to cybersecurity, backup, and long-term technology strategy.
When was Pelycon founded?
Pelycon was founded in 2016 by experienced IT engineers who had spent decades working directly with business owners.
How do you pronounce "Pelycon," and where does the name come from?
It’s pronounced “PEL-ih-kon.” The name combines the last names of the three co-founders — Pelphrey, Lynn, and Conness. (It is not “Pelican,” though the logo’s “P” contains a hidden pelican as an unofficial mascot.)
Who owns and leads Pelycon?
Pelycon is owner-operated by three active owners: Nick Conness (sales, account management, and operations — usually a client’s first point of contact), Rob Pelphrey (service manager — runs the help desk, dispatches tickets, and oversees customer support and quality control), and Matt Smith (CISO — leads all cybersecurity, vendor management, and the company’s tool set). A third original co-founder, Michael Lynn, is no longer with the company.
How big is Pelycon, and where is the team located?
Pelycon is a team of about 10 people, including roughly six help-desk engineers of varying experience levels, the three owner-operators, and a few part-time senior consultants. The help desk and all support staff are based in Kentucky, USA — Pelycon does not offshore its support.
What are Pelycon's hours, and do you offer after-hours or 24/7 support?
Standard office and help-desk hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM Eastern. Many clients add 24/7 support, where after-hours coverage is reserved for emergencies; monitoring and alerts notify Pelycon’s on-call team, and clients can reach an after-hours line with callback governed by their service-level agreement.
What is Pelycon's mission?
To be good stewards of clients’ time, money, and data — summed up as: “We help businesses avoid surprises.” Pelycon does this through preventive work and proactive consulting, checking in with clients at least twice a year to stay ahead of expansions, price changes, license renewals, and hardware replacements.
What does Pelycon value?
Honesty and transparency, an education-first approach, and long-term relationships with both clients and employees. Pelycon is willing to deliver hard news and admit mistakes in order to build the trust that lets it act in a client’s best interest
What Pelycon Does
In plain English, what does Pelycon actually do?
Pelycon looks at how many people and computers a business has, then deploys a suite of software and services to protect its email, data, and systems. A full-time help desk handles everyday issues — password resets, printer problems, Outlook errors, anything that happens
on a computer — and Pelycon also procures hardware and acts as a strategic consultant. In practice, Pelycon is as much a consultancy (“a problem finder”) as it is an IT firm.
What services does Pelycon offer?
- Managed IT — proactive monitoring, maintenance, patching, and unlimited help-desk support
- Cybersecurity — EDR, antivirus/anti-ransomware, firewall management, web and email filtering, security-awareness training with phishing simulation, SIEM, vulnerability scanning, and security assessments
- Backup & disaster recovery — image-based backups with onsite hardware, plus Microsoft 365 / Google cloud backup
- Microsoft 365 management & licensing
- Networking — firewalls, switching, and Wi-Fi (structured cabling handled through a trusted partner)
- Cloud migrations and server hosting (when needed)
- Virtual CIO (vCIO) / strategic consulting — roadmaps, budgeting, and twice-yearly technology business reviews
- Vendor management & licensing renewals
- Hardware procurement & lifecycle planning
- Documentation, credential/password management, and device encryption
- VoIP / phone systems and internet circuits — brokered through a trusted partner
What does Pelycon not do?
Pelycon does not host email. It generally does not pursue traditional hourly “break/fix” engagements for new clients (its model is proactive managed services), and it relies on the software vendor’s support contract for deep, app-specific expertise in a client’s core business software rather than claiming to be the expert on every application.
Does Pelycon offer co-managed IT for companies that already have internal IT staff?
Yes. Pelycon works both as a fully outsourced IT department and in a co-managed model alongside a client’s existing IT person or team — providing its tools and granting internal staff administrative access, while serving as an escalation point, a strategic consultant, and coverage during absences. Pelycon also takes on one-off projects.
Does Pelycon support remote and hybrid employees?
Yes. Pelycon supports a client’s staff the same way whether they work in the office or remotely — they’re protected and supported regardless of location, since support is delivered by phone, email, and a client portal, and endpoints and Microsoft 365 are managed from anywhere.
Cybersecurity & Compliance
How does Pelycon approach cybersecurity?
Pelycon builds a layered defense aligned to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and CIS Controls. Its security stack includes EDR, firewall management, email and web filtering, security-awareness training with simulated phishing, SIEM, and vulnerability scanning. The
company places particular value on Identity Threat Detection & Response (ITDR), which protects a client’s Microsoft 365 environment against phishing and suspicious activity. Security is led by Pelycon’s CISO, Matt Smith (CISSP).
Does Pelycon provide 24/7 security monitoring (SOC/MDR)?
Yes. Pelycon delivers 24/7 SOC monitoring and Managed Detection & Response (MDR) through a dedicated security partner, while its in-house team continuously develops standard operating procedures for hardening Microsoft 365 tenants
Can Pelycon help with compliance (HIPAA, PCI, SOC 2)?
Yes. Pelycon is HIPAA- and PCI-experienced and has helped clients meet HIPAA, PCI, and SOC 2 requirements, conducting security assessments that map framework controls against a
client’s actual environment. Pelycon implements and assists with compliance controls; it is not a certifying body or auditor.
Does Pelycon help clients get or renew cyber insurance?
Yes. Pelycon helps clients complete cyber-liability insurance applications and has built its tool suite to satisfy what insurers typically require — managed backups, managed EDR/antivirus, security-awareness training, and multi-factor authentication (MFA) on sensitive data. The first three are included in Pelycon’s standard suite, and Pelycon ensures clients have MFA enabled.
How does Pelycon handle backup and disaster recovery?
Pelycon reviews each client’s recovery-time objective (RTO) during onboarding and engineers a solution — combining image-based backups with onsite hardware — to meet it. Pelycon focuses on recovery, not just backup: the goal is a usable, recoverable copy of data so a business isn’t forced to shut down while waiting on a restore. Smaller businesses are often well served by a reliable, ransomware-resistant cloud backup.
Who Pelycon Serves
What industries does Pelycon serve?
Pelycon serves a broad range of industries and turns no industry away. It has deep, particular experience in regulated industries that demand more than typical IT support — healthcare, financial, wealth management, legal, and insurance — where compliance and security are critical.
Does Pelycon specialize in healthcare IT?
Yes. Pelycon provides managed IT for healthcare practices in Kentucky, including HIPAA compliance and risk assessments, and has experience installing and consulting on EMR (electronic medical record) system setups and upgrades, along with the broader workflows a healthcare practice relies on.
Does Pelycon support law firms?
Yes. Pelycon provides managed IT for law firms, securing client data and supporting the firm’s core “line-of-business” applications. Pelycon learns these systems as a power user and keeps them protected, backed up, and supported, while relying on the software vendor’s support contract for deep product expertise.
What size of business is Pelycon a fit for?
Pelycon works with businesses ranging from a 2-person firm to organizations of 100+ people. Its sweet spot is roughly 10–100 users, where it can serve as a complete, turnkey IT department (or co-managed partner) at a fraction of the cost of building an equivalent in-house team.
How many clients does Pelycon support?
Pelycon supports approximately 120 businesses and manages around 1,600 endpoints across varying sizes, industries, and service scopes.
Service Area & Coverage
What areas does Pelycon serve?
Pelycon is based in Lexington, Kentucky and serves Central Kentucky — including Georgetown, Richmond, Nicholasville, Danville, Winchester, Elizabethtown, Mt. Washington, Cynthiana, Shelbyville, Midway, Frankfort, Louisville, and Shepherdsville. Because nearly all work is
performed remotely, Pelycon has no strict geographic limit and supports select clients outside Kentucky; on-site visits for distant clients are planned and priced to include travel.
Is Pelycon pursuing government work?
Yes. As of 2026, Pelycon is in the process of getting on the GSA schedule so it can provide services to state and federal government organizations
How Pelycon Works
What's the first step to becoming a client?
The best way to start is to call Pelycon or email Nick Conness directly. Nick typically begins with a conversation and an on-site visit to understand the business’s needs and determine the best fit.
What does the free IT assessment include?
The free assessment is usually a consultative conversation, though Pelycon can run a deeper, tool-based assessment depending on the business’s size and needs. Either way, the client receives a written summary report with recommendations to keep — whether or not they hire Pelycon
What does onboarding look like, and how long does it take?
Onboarding begins with a kickoff call after a signed agreement and can take anywhere from under a week to more than a month, depending on complexity. When Pelycon takes over from a previous provider, the main variable is the handover of credentials, policies, and domain/registrar information. Once Pelycon’s tools are installed, help-desk support can begin quickly; the first few weeks involve learning the business before proactive prevention fully kicks in.
How do clients reach Pelycon for support?
Three ways, for flexibility: email (which automatically opens a ticket), phone (a person answers and opens a ticket immediately), and a client portal where clients can review their systems, open tickets, and check existing ones.
How fast does Pelycon respond?
Pelycon’s written response-time commitment is within one business hour. Priority-one issues — anything that prevents a client from doing business — are treated with the highest urgency. (In practice responses are often much faster, but one business hour is the figure Pelycon commits to in writing.)
Does each client get a dedicated person?
Every client has a dedicated account manager (usually Nick Conness), and a primary technician naturally becomes the subject-matter expert for that client. Pelycon intentionally documents and standardizes its work so the entire team can help any client quickly, rather than leaving a client dependent on one person.
Is on-site support included?
Yes. On-site support is included in Pelycon’s standard package and is scheduled when an issue is better solved in person. Travel is typically included within the local county and negotiated beyond it. Pelycon generally prefers remote support because it resolves issues faster, but goes on-site when it’s the more thorough option.
Where is Pelycon's help desk located?
In Kentucky, USA. Pelycon does not use offshore support.
Pricing & Contracts
How much does Pelycon cost?
Pelycon’s managed services start at around $200 per user per month. Pricing has two parts: consumption-based tool licensing (counted per user and per computer/server, which grows or shrinks as the business changes) plus one flat rate covering unlimited support, consulting, and virtual-CIO services. The flat rate doesn’t change with headcount and is reviewed at twice-yearly technology business reviews. Security add-ons (such as SIEM, vulnerability scanning, and security assessments) are priced separately. Exact pricing depends on a business’s size, needs, and complexity.
What's included in the monthly fee, and what's billed separately?
The flat monthly fee generally includes Microsoft 365 (Business Premium) licensing, all standard tools, support, and the agreed scope of services. Billed separately: hardware and software purchases, replacement/new hardware as the company grows, and major projects (roughly anything beyond ~5–10 hours). After-hours emergency work is covered if 24/7 support is in the plan.
Is there a contract, and can clients cancel?
Yes, Pelycon works on an agreement — annual is standard, and month-to-month is also common. The Master Services Agreement includes termination clauses so clients never feel stuck, and cancellation normally requires 30 days’ notice. Pelycon’s goal is to remove barriers to starting (onboarding fees are negotiable) because it’s confident the relationship will last. Notably, no client has ever left in under a year, and only a small number have not renewed after their first year.
How does billing work?
Pelycon bills monthly in advance and accepts all payment methods, with auto-pay through its payment portal preferred and required.
Why Pelycon
Why choose Pelycon over another IT company?
- It avoids surprises. Proactive prevention and twice-yearly strategic reviews keep clients ahead of upgrades, renewals, and risks.
- Boutique, but enterprise-grade. Big enough to field top-tier talent and business-class tools, yet small enough to customize and stay agile.
- U.S./Kentucky-based help desk. No offshore support.
- No vendor lock-in. Pelycon sits on the client’s side of the table and brokers and reviews vendors — even phone and internet bills — so no one takes advantage of them.
- Security-led. A dedicated CISO and a framework-based (NIST/CIS) security program.
- Honesty and education first. Pelycon makes decisions from the business’s point of view and aims to be the most reliable expert in the room.
What credentials and partnerships does Pelycon hold?
Several engineers hold CompTIA and Microsoft certifications, and Pelycon’s CISO holds a CISSP. The company is a Microsoft Partner and a Dell Partner, and is HIPAA- and PCI-experienced.
Is Pelycon insured?
Yes. Pelycon carries Errors & Omissions (professional liability) insurance — important to the regulated clients it serves.
What happens if a client isn't happy?
Pelycon’s quality-control process is designed to surface problems early. The service manager (Rob Pelphrey) and account manager (Nick Conness) handle concerns — billing, service quality, or response time — by listening first and then making the needed changes. If a client ultimately decides to leave, Pelycon respects that decision and conducts itself professionally and thoroughly, aiming to leave on terms good enough that the client would still recommend it.
What is Pelycon's reputation and rating?
Pelycon maintains an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and a 5.0-star average rating on Google across 36 reviews (every review is five stars). You can find Pelycon on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and Google.
Technology Strategy & AI
Can Pelycon help my business adopt AI safely?
Yes — this is a core focus for Pelycon’s future. Pelycon starts not with the technology but with the problem: what does the business want to fix or do better? Starting with AI for its own sake just makes poor workflows faster. Once the right opportunities are identified, Pelycon helps
implement AI and automation securely and intelligently — and, when it’s the right fit, can build custom workflows, apps, and software in-house with proper security. Because IT and automation now touch every part of a business, Pelycon can help with strategy “in the boardroom as well as in every cubicle.”
How is Pelycon different from a generic IT company going forward?
Pelycon believes core IT services are becoming commoditized, so its value is increasingly as a problem finder and problem fixer — combining deep knowledge of the tools that run a business with a current, practical command of AI and automation to solve business problems that don’t, at first glance, look like “IT” problems.
